The problem of religious persecution in Europe — countless millions slaughtered or tortured in the name of religious righteousness — was the backdrop of the American Founding. The Americans tackled this problem head-on and solved it by establishing the first regime of genuine religious liberty. In America, a person’s civil rights and protection by the laws would in no way depend on his or her religious views.
