Swamp Show hosted by SEAR (South East Aurora Republicans)

March 27, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Swamp Show you are about to enjoy is a solution to a problem.

The problem is getting Americans to pay attention to the great costs, deep injustices, and real harm caused by millions of pages of unconstitutional government regulations and the millions of unelected bureaucrats who enforce them.

Dr. Thomas Krannawitter—who holds a PhD in political science and is now President of a Colorado-based business, Speakeasy Ideas—has been studying modern administrative-regulatory government for twenty years, its origins, its growth, its ways.

Not long ago, he was writing a treatise critical of regulations—not a policy study of one particular regulation, but a critique of the very concept of regulations—when he reminded himself that few people would actually read it. Or care.

So he looked for a way to jazz it up, spice it up, make it a little sexy and fun. Then the 2016 Presidential campaign came along. And for those of you who don’t know, it was WEIRD. Really weird. But in the midst of all that weirdness, one candidate, Donald Trump, was talking openly about “draining the swamp.”

That’s when Dr. Krannawitter got an idea. A wonderful idea. A wonderfully devious idea. “Why not,” he asked himself, “present the problems of big bureaucratic government in the form of satire?” Why not write a book of advice for those who want to save the swamp?

Dr. Krannawitter has been part of the conservative movement his entire adult career. He’s taught at Claremont McKenna College, Hillsdale College, & George Mason University. He’s held research fellowships from the Heritage Foundation, the Earhart Foundation, the Churchill Society, ISI, and IHS. He has many friends at conservative magazines and think tanks.

He knows all too well that the conservative movement in the United States, which is now over 70 years old, has failed to scale back the size & scope of government. The conservative movement includes many smart and good people and the conservative movement has not achieved its own goals.

But Dr. Krannawitter also knows that humor can move people in ways that graphs and charts and wonkish policy analyses cannot. That’s what he’s doing with Save the Swamp. Borrowing from the model of satire mastery in C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape Letters, which featured letters of advice from a senior demon to a junior demon, Dr. Krannawitter is providing advice to budding bureaucrats, which provides a humorously ironic platform to highlight the problems of big bureaucratic government.
