Slavery represented the most blatant violation of the principles of the Declaration. Slavery and freedom are eternally opposed to each other, after all. But that problematic contradiction is not the end of the story. What the Americans did to solve that problem is one of the most beautiful, moving tragedies in all of human history.

It’s common to hear that the Constitution is old, outdated, racist, sexist, or otherwise immoral, and therefore not worthy of modern Americans. If the Constitution be considered at all, many argue, it should be considered merely as a “living” document. Are these Constitutional critiques correct? We cannot know without knowing the original premise, purpose, and design of the Constitution, which is this month’s topic.
